Saerima (taken from the old English word for coast) was started by Mike Buchan in 2020, inspired by a chance conversation during lockdown to produce a limited range of zero plastic leisure goods. With his links to local community entrepreneurs, producers, creatives and artists, Mike wanted products, where possible, to be designed, curated, sourced and made in and around his waterfront home city of Portsmouth to give people the option to shop more ethically while helping local communities.
Out of a request for ‘no plastic’, he embarked on a journey that has gone from producing one-off prototypes to ordering posts by the tonne and enough hessian to cover several football pitches! This hessian, together with the wood and cotton, are sourced from credible suppliers who subscribe to best practices.
Our products are designed not to last forever. They are not overly bright and intrusive but are left with an untreated look to discreetly, subtly and naturally blend in with their surroundings, a purposely stark contrast to the plastic alternatives available on the market. At the end of their life they are entirely recyclable/compostable.
At present we are distributing some products in the south of the UK through some trusted partner organisations. We continue to work with communities of makers, natural materials and people coming back into the world of work. The blend of natural material makes sure our products are not going to be identical across the board. Enjoy the difference! 🙂
